"Scannable" Is a Marketing Word. Here's What Scanners Actually Read

Magnetic stripe. RFID. NFC. QR code. Four different technologies, and "scannable" tells you which one. Or does it?
Every fake ID vendor in America claims the card is "scannable." The word is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Scanable by what? Every scanner in every bar, club, and gas station in the country runs on a different technology, and a card that reads on one might fail completely on another.
Once you understand the difference between the four technologies, "scannable" stops being a mystery. And you'll know exactly what you're paying for when someone quotes you a price.
Technology 1: Magnetic Stripe (Magstripe)
The magnetic stripe is the black bar on the back of your credit card. It's been around since the 1960s. Here's how it works:
When a card is manufactured, a machine writes tiny magnetic particles onto the stripe in a specific pattern. Each pattern encodes information — a name, a date, a number. When a bar swipes the card through a reader, the reader detects the magnetic pattern and decodes it into data.
Why it matters:
Magstripe is the most common scanner in bars and clubs. It's cheap, reliable, and every bar in America has one. If your card has a good magstripe, it will read at 90% of the places you go. The problem? A cheap card has a
generic
magstripe — one that might not match the specific bar. A real state ID has a magstripe tied to the issuing state. That's the difference between "scannable" and "sometimes scannable."
Technology 2: RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)
RFID is a step up from magstripe. Instead of a physical bar, the card contains a tiny chip and antenna. When the card gets close to a reader (usually within 1–3 inches), the reader emits a radio signal. The chip picks up the signal, powers on, and sends back the encoded data.
RFID is faster than magstripe — you don't need to swipe, you just hold the card near the reader. It's also more durable, because there's no physical bar to wear down.
Why it matters:
RFID is becoming more common in upscale bars and clubs. It's also used in some airports and train stations. If you're going to a venue that uses RFID, your card needs a working RFID chip. A cheap card might have one, but it might be a low-quality one that doesn't transmit reliably. A $99 card will have a proper one.
Technology 3: NFC (Near Field Communication)
NFC is a specific subset of RFID. It works the same way — a chip and antenna, a reader that emits a signal, the chip responds. The difference? NFC is standardized. It's used in Apple Pay, Android Pay, and most modern smartphones. When you tap your phone on a credit card terminal, that's NFC.
Some bars and clubs now use NFC readers instead of (or in addition to) magstripe readers. It's faster and more modern. Your card needs an NFC chip to read on these.
Why it matters:
NFC is the future. It's what Apple and Samsung use for their digital wallets. It's what the next generation of "digital IDs" will run on. If your card has a working NFC chip, it will read at the most modern venues. If it doesn't, you're stuck at the old-school magstripe bars. That's a real difference in what you can and can't do.
Technology 4: QR Code
The simplest of the four. A QR code is a square image made of black and white dots. It encodes data — a name, a date, a number — in a pattern that a camera can read. Any smartphone camera can scan a QR code. No special hardware needed.
Why it matters:
QR codes are everywhere. They're on menus, receipts, and increasingly on IDs. The problem? They're easy to forge. Anyone with a printer can make a QR code that looks real. And they're easy to smudge. One fingerprint and the code becomes unreadable. For a high-stakes ID, QR is the weakest of the four. It's fine for a restaurant menu. It's not fine for a bar that's checking whether you're 21.
What "Scannable" Should Mean
Given all of the above, here's what "scannable" should actually mean when a vendor uses the word:
✓ It has a working magstripe. That's the baseline. If it can't read on a magstripe reader, it's not scannable. Full stop.
✓ It has a working RFID chip. That's the next level. If it can read on an RFID reader, it's scannable in more places.
✓ It has a working NFC chip. That's the future. If it can read on an NFC reader, it's scannable at the most modern venues.
Anything less than that — a card with a QR code but no magstripe, or a magstripe that's generic and not tied to a state — is "partially scannable." And "partially scannable" is a polite way of saying "it might work, or it might not."
Common Myth
"If it says scannable on the website, it's scannable." No. "Scannable" on a website is a marketing claim. It means the card should be scannable, based on the technology it's supposed to have. But the technology it has is the part that's not verified. A card can say "scannable" on the website and still have a dead magstripe. Or a magstripe that reads on a test device but not on the specific bar scanner. The website claim is a promise. The actual card is the proof. If the vendor isn't testing the card before they ship it, the promise is just a promise.
